A silt fence is a temporary fence made from geotextile cloth that’s designed to prevent sediment from escaping a construction site or similar working area and running into streams or other water systems.
If you’re planning any construction work and there’s the potential for silt runoff, it’s worth installing a silt fence to prevent it and avoid a fine.
Installing a silt fence must be done correctly and adhere to strict specifications. If you’re unsure of these or want to ensure you’ve done it correctly, you can find an expert through the Ezy Peazy platform to help you. Here’s how a silt fence expert can help.
Installing a silt fence isn’t as straightforward as simply putting some posts into the ground and attaching the geotextile cloth. The specifications for installing a silt fence are pretty strict.
First, you must dig a trench at least 200 mm deep and 100 mm wide. The cloth must extend 200 mm below the ground and at least 600 mm above the ground and be supported by posts driven a minimum of 400 mm into the ground on the downhill side of the cloth and no more than two metres apart. Once this is done, you may refill the trench with soil and cover the cloth in the trench. To ensure the sediment can’t escape around the edges, the fence must be extended two metres up the slope.
A silt fence specialist you find via the Ezy Peazy platform can help you be sure you get the specifications right the first time. They’ll be able to help you determine how much cloth and how many posts you’ll need for your silt fence. They’ll also have the tools, skills, and expertise to do the complete installation for you, so you can have peace of mind the job’s done correctly.
Because silt fences are a temporary solution, it’s worth checking them for damage frequently, especially after heavy rain. Any damage to the silt fence may mean sediment could pass through, so it’s vital to repair this as soon as possible.
As well as repairing damage to the fence material, it’s essential to ensure the fence is functioning correctly by letting water pass through while keeping the sediment in. If a lot of sediment runoff causes the silt fence to bulge, it’s worth clearing some of this away so it doesn’t cause further damage to the fence.
Enlisting the help of someone knowledgeable about silt fences can ensure the fence is built to specification, which will minimise the chances of damage occurring. If, however, there are extreme conditions that cause harm, they can fix it. An expert you find through Ezy Peazy can either do one-off checks of your silt fence or can be retained to check the fence regularly and do maintenance work as required.
Once you’re done with construction, or you no longer need the silt fence, you will need to have it removed. You’ll first need to remove the sediment the silt fence held back so this doesn’t flow downhill into waterways or neighbour’s yards and defeat the purpose of having it there in the first place.
So, once you’ve cleared the sediment and disposed of it correctly, you need to remove the fence, refill the trench, and remediate the area. To ensure this is all done correctly, it pays to enlist the help of a fencing expert you can find through Ezy Peazy. They can help remove the sediment and the fence and then make sure the area is restored as close to its original condition.

Build 8 approx metres of 2.1m high fence to connect two existing boundary fences in same style. Style is coloursteel with wood trim. The coloursteel is on both sides of fence.

Fence posts are attached by two bolts each to a concrete bock wall. Two posts bolts have come adrift from the wall, and panels now have large swaying in the wind
"Anthony is a really nice pleasant guy. His thought process and the ability to remedy a situation impressed me. Thanks Anthony"
I want to get two-three palings of a fence replaced or at least blocked. I don't particularly want to involve the neighbour though the cross palings are on their side. Something 'good enough' without replacing the whole fence would be great.
"Really happy with Zeeshan's work. Good communication and a great job fine!"
Take off old Magnalatch pool lock and replace with new one. Screw fence board back in. Plank 2M long. Put screws in top capping of fence to fix firmly. Fence approx 14m long.
"Efficient and professional 😊"
Hi guys we would like a fence build, we have an old one that's needs to be removed too and we have enough wood here for the job, so mainly it will be cost of concerte and labour. Thanks
"Teli and his team were amazing!! So efficient , we are so pleased with everything they have done , would highly recommend them , will definitely get them back again for future projects 😀 "
We need someone to help tidy up our picket fence. Some pickets have come off and I’m not sure if you can replace them or if all the pickets need to be replaced. The bracket for the pickets is still in place but needs a few bolts / nails tightened. Wr are happy to paint it once the works done we just need a handyman to get it looking sharp first!
