Before getting out your spade and garden tools and getting to work, it’s essential to plan and design your garden. This way, you don’t get halfway through your project before realising that the space is too small or big to achieve your vision. You also don’t want to find out too late that you don’t like how it looks or run out of money before completing the garden project.
While planning and designing a garden may seem straightforward, a lot of pre-thought and hard work goes into creating and maintaining a beautiful garden. So, if you’re planning to spruce up your backyard, it’s worth finding a professional landscaper through Ezy Peazy to help you.
Here’s how a landscaping expert can help plan and design your garden:
It’s not unreasonable for even a moderately sized garden design project to run well into thousands of dollars. When you combine the cost of materials, labour, and plants, it’s surprising how quickly it can all add up.
When you sit down with a professional landscaper to discuss the vision for your garden – like one you can find through Ezy Peazy – they can give you a reasonably accurate estimate for the work. They base their calculation on how big your garden is, the required work type and duration, and the materials and plants you want. From here, you can adjust the plan and design to bring it to a level you can afford while creating a beautiful garden.
A crucial part of planning and designing a garden is choosing suitable trees and plants for your location. Depending on where you live in New Zealand, the amount of sunlight and rain your garden gets and your personal preferences all impact the types of plants suitable for your garden.
The right plants and trees will also change according to how keen a gardener you are. If you’re more of a hands-off type of gardener, you’ll want to plant plants that are low maintenance. However, if you’re a keen gardener and like to get your hands dirty, you might prefer plants requiring more care.
When you talk to the professional landscaper, tell them your preferences and experience as a gardener. This will help them recommend and buy plants that suit your style and approach to gardening.
Installing an irrigation system is a great way to keep a garden looking beautiful with minimal hands-on work. In some areas of New Zealand, keeping your garden watered during summer is essential for keeping it looking beautiful.
A landscaper can advise on the most suitable irrigation system for your garden and lifestyle. These include fully automated systems that run on a timer to more manual irrigation systems that need you to turn on the tap if your plants need moisture.
A great way to add variety to your garden and partition off sections is by using planter boxes and containers. These can act as features or be more functional, such as places to grow vegetables or contain plants that spread easily.
You can buy planter boxes and containers from your local hardware store or online. However, if you’re getting your garden professionally landscaped, talk to the landscaper about how to incorporate planter boxes and containers as part of the garden design. This way, you can, for example, have a bespoke planter box that fits in with your garden’s overall look and feel; you can make it as high, low, big or small as you like.
Gardens have come a long way from being just grass and plants; there is now a wide variety of materials you can use to add the finishing touches to your garden.
Rocks, for example, are a great way to partition your lawn from your garden beds, while gravel or pebbles make a great path or walkway. And rather than leaving the soil in your garden beds or planter boxes uncovered, mulch is an excellent material for retaining moisture in your beds. It prevents evaporation and can be a feature, as it comes in various colours and textures like black, bark, or forest floor mulch.
When discussing your garden plan with the landscaper, ask for their recommendation about whether rocks, gravel, or mulch would best suit your garden both functionally and aesthetically.

Kia ora. My garden has been decimated by new fencing. I'm left with two big circles where there was a pile of scoria/clay/concrete - now taken away - but need the nasty top layer taken off to replace with some of the garden mix so that hopefully the grass can spread. The last photo shows another patch that needs to be dug up - mostly to then plant things in: Things to plant are: a wheelbarrow full of canna lillies to plant, x2 big-ish dracaenias, x6 small-ish pohutakawas, and a tangled pile of succulents (aeoniums) to untangle and plant + some other odd things that have been dug up and are now wilting away. All will require digging new beds + holes into the solid clay/scoria-ish garden. I hope that all makes sense! I think I have most of the equipment you'd need - including a battery-powered augur, pick, decent space + 10 bags of garden mix to disperse. Also hoping you can take away all the crap that's dug up? Would like it done before the rain hopefully comes in a week-ish. Thanks, Katie
“100% recommend - worked really hard in some difficult conditions - and the garden looks so much better. And a really nice guy too. Thanks, Katie”
Our bakyard requiers weeding and cleaning. Then we want to plant few trees (8 trees) as shown in the photos. We have 5 to 6 flower beds, which we'd like to have a herb and veggie garden if possible, as well as flower beds on the sides of the backyard. We want to demolish three of the flower beds and flatten the area.
“Punctual, quick, tidy, and in one word—exceptional. Couldn’t be happier with the gardening work!”
I need a garden clean up done Thursday and Friday this week. It’s not a full landscaping job, but involves weeding, some spraying, removal of some shrubs and dead branches, clearing and tidying a patio garden, and planting a few pots. I also need some old bark and stones moved around and replaced with new - approx 4 to 5 cubic meters. The job is physical so you will need to be quite fit. Looking for someone who has good reviews and works hard - have been let down by a Gardner and need the job done quite quickly. Prob around 2 days work - $70 per hour. Have included a few pics.

Level and Prep Sloped Yard Area for Trampoline (Approx. 4.5m) Looking for someone to prepare and level a sloped section of my backyard to safely install a trampoline (approx. 4.5 meters in diameter). The job will involve ground levelling, compacting, and ensuring a stable, even surface suitable for a trampoline base. The area currently has a noticeable slope, so some soil movement or minor excavation may be required. You’ll need your own tools and equipment for ground prep and levelling.
